Hiker Code of Conduct

Gilbert Birch is very hiker friendly! If your stay is connected to backpacking, thanks for your agreement to these guidelines as the code of conduct:

Shower before bed. Clean hiker and clean clothes are necessary before any furniture contact.

You’re likely exhausted and had a long drive, too. Regardless, please shower before getting into bed. If you don’t have a clean set of clothes for bedtime, let me know and we will work out some loaner pajamas. No need to apologize for how you or your gear smells. I’ve been there; I get it. Also, please don’t sit on upholstered furniture before you’re clean and in clean clothes.

Use the microfiber cloths for cleaning gear and yourself; not the white towels and washcloths.

Please use the microfiber cloths (provided in your bathroom and in the utility area of the kitchen) as the washcloth for your shower and for cleaning gear. Our Virginia red clay mud will not come out of the white towels and washcloths.

All gear stays in the utility / laundry area of the kitchen.

Unpack and process your gear and laundry there. Please don’t take it into the bedroom. It’s a lot easier to clean up in the kitchen and its adjacent to the washer. This also eliminates potential incidental contact between a dirty item and the clean fabrics and carpet in the bedroom.

Wash boots and muddy items on the rear patio near the grill.

Feel free to use the hose as necessary! If there’s mud on the patio when you’re done, spray off the patio with the hose.

Don’t open wet tents or tarps inside the house.

Hikers are welcome to use any of the outdoor furniture as hanging fixtures for wet gear. Please keep all the shelter processing outside the house.

Food related cleanup should be done in the house kitchen, not the bathroom.

Please dispose of food waste and related trash in the house kitchen and not in the rental bathroom. You’re welcome to use the kitchen sink to scrub cookware. You’re welcome to use the kitchen counters to process water filters and lay all the components out to air dry.

Can I ship my gear to the house in advance of my visit?

Yes with prior arrangements being made.
